The directly measured effect of pressure, , and the estimated effect of pressure, , using partial molal volume data for carbonate equilibria in pure water and seawater have been examined. The partial molal volume of the carbonate ion, cc/mol at 25°C in seawater has been determined from the effect of pressure on the dissociation of HCO 3 - and from partial molal volume data using the ion-pairing model of (1969). This result does not agree with the value of cc/mol determined from the effect of pressure on the solubility of CaCO 3 , . Possible causes of this difference of 9·7 cc/mol in are briefly discussed. If our estimated value for the is used to estimate the effect of pressure on the solubility of CaCO 3 ; a greater proportion of the oceans becomes undersaturated with respect to CaCO 3 .
