The effect of magnetospheric convection on the macrostructure of the polar ionosphere is analyzed on the basis of a mathematical model of the ionosphere which self-consistently describes composition, dynamics, and thermal conditions in the three-dimensional case for average heliogeophysical conditions. It is shown that the main ionospheric trough does not disappear even in the complete absence of convective plasma motion, which affects only the longitidunal extent of the trough.
