High-latitude field-aligned currents carrying charge from the magnetosphere are closed in the ionosphere; ionospheric currents flow toward lower latitudes and are concentrated near the magnetic equator. In the present paper, the magnitude of this effect is determined on the basis of a two-dimensional model of the ionosphere. The elliptic boundary value problem for electrostatic potential is solved numerically, and the equivalent current system is constructed. It is shown that high-latitude sources generate significant electric fields and currents near the equator.
