The occurrence of scintillations of ATS 3 (137 MHz) beacons recorded at Huancayo on geomagnetically quiet and disturbed days during the years 1969-1976 is discussed. The scintillation index (SI) values were separated into two groups of five international quiet days and five international disturbed days, and average nocturnal variations of SI on quiet (Q) and disturbed (D) days were computed for different seasons or years. It has been found that the reversals of horizontal electric field over the equator due to geomagnetic disturbances can cause the generation of range spread and VHF scintillations in individual cases. The considered study shows that statistically too, the similar behavior of scintillations and range spread during geomagnetic disturbance is a consequence of the modification of the horizontal electric field by the geomagnetic disturbance.
