Dissociative recombination of electron with molecular ions may be fast enough to interfere with the propagation of the effects of critical ionization velocity in the Shuttle environment. It may quench the plasma discharge and impose limits on the conditions for the plasma discharge process in the Shuttle glow. Nevertheless, ionization and dissociative recombination processes may still take place, albeit in a nonsustained manner. It is suggested that these competing processes may be detected and identified by spectroscopic measurements.
