The paper examines the effect of the type of boundary conditions (including Neumann and Dirchlet) on the magnitude of global energy release due to the Joule energy dissipation of ionospheric current carriers. It is shown that this energy release is smallest for the Dirichlet conditions, which is explained by lower (on the average) densities of horizontal currents. This lower density is caused by the effective passage of these currents through the boundary of the current-spreading region.
