An analysis is made of the effect of horizontal wind due to atmospheric tides and internal gravity waves on passive-admixture diffusion in the upper atmosphere. It is shown that the interaction between the shear of the horizontal wind varying in time and over height and the usual diffusion spreading leads to a substantial increase in the diffusion velocity in the horizontal plane. For typical values of tide parameters, the horizontal diffusion at heights of 80-150 km is found to increase due to the effect considered by 2-to-3 orders of magnitude.
