The effect of thermal annealing on the optical properties of high-crystalline-quality HgTe-CdTe superlattices, prepared by an MBE technique, was investigated by measuring optical spectra of as-grown and of annealed samples. It was found that substantial changes in the subband-related absorption structure could be induced by annealing the samples at temperatures just slightly above the growth temperature. An observed shift of the fundamental absorption edge to higher energy, as well as an apparent broadening of the subband absorption structure that occurred as a result of annealing, are explained by the effect of interdiffusion of HgTe and CdTe layers.
