A small displacement of the Hartmann screen from the optic axis of the surface under test may introduce substantial errors on the departures of this surface from the target surface which are found through the test. An expression for the magnitude of these errors shows that they increase with the asphericity of the target surface, being negligible for spherical surfaces which are near completion. This expression was verified by a computer-simulated test of a perfect hyperbolic mirror.
