Tracing the history of the formation of the chemical elements gives an interesting and useful window onto the evolution of the universe. Much of the history can be traced with the aid of rather ``elementary'' models. We consider the abundance of deuterium, globular cluster systems, metallicities of galaxies as a function of mass, star formation and metallicity as a function of redshift, the chemical homogeneity of the interstellar medium, and the origin of interstellar dust. The value of ``elementary'' explanation of the overall evolution of complex astronomical systems is emphasized.
