Data from the University of Alberta magnetometer array were used to identify the characteristics of the Pi 2 pulsations propagating far to the east of the region of the onset of the expansive phase substorm currents. In addition, the polarizations of the Pi 2 pulsations were investigated. Results point to a close connection of Pi 2 pulsations with the onset of field-aligned currents in the substorm's expansive phase. The eastward propagating Pi 2 pulsations have very high phase velocities (typically 40 km/s) which are comparable with those of the westward propagating mode, and the polarizations and field configurations are compatible with a field-aligned and ionospheric current model which is very similar to that for the westward propagating component.
