The growth of an eastward electrojet in the afternoon and midnight sector is usually interpreted as the growth of directly driven activity which may terminate in a substorm expansive phase onset. If the eastward electrojet is detected shortly after magnetic midnight, it is thought to be the extension of the evening sector electrojet into the early morning hours. In this paper we shall show that an eastward electrojet can develop at high latitude in the morning sector and that it may be a consequence of the presence of northward electric field poleward of the morning sector westward electrojet at times when the high latitude ionosphere is sunlit.
