The longitudinal and transverse structures of extensive air showers with
energies in the range 10 exp 17 - 3 x 10 exp 19 eV are analyzed using
many years of data collected at the Yakutsk EAS array. It is pointed out
that the phenomena observed in this energy region cannot be explained in
terms of the existing models.
