The progress made in three major areas of earth tide research during the past 4 or 5 years is reviewed. These are the inference of tide parameters from small and slow variations in satellite orbits; the quantitative assessment of the causes of anomalies in the tidal variations in gravity, tilt, and strain; and the incorporation of earth tide effects into numerical computations of ocean tides. Much of the improved understanding of tides is attributed to the higher precision of measurement methods. Notable advances in instrumentation include the dramatic increase in satellite tracking accuracy and the perfection of the cryogenic gravity meter and the laser strain meter.
