An approximate method is presented for calculating trajectories for transfer to halo orbits near the collinear libration points L2 (L1) of the earth-sun system using the scheme originally proposed by Farquhar (1990). The method is used to identify important relationships between the parameters of the halo orbit and those of the initial trajectory. Mission dates are specified, and the main trajectory parameters for the 1994 mission are determined. The analysis yields a first approximation to the initial data, with sufficiently accurate calculation of the nominal transfer trajectories using numerical integration.
