Scientific paper

Early investigations concerning the properties of the upper atmosphere were conducted with the aid of German V-2 rockets. Changes required to adapt the missile for the intended research applications are discussed, taking into account the installation of research instrumentation and related equipment in various parts of the missile body. Studies initiated with V-2 missiles were continued with other rockets. The result of the studies are considered, giving attention to atmospheric properties, cosmic radiation, ionospheric measurements, solar astronomy, and solar flare measurements.
