A multinational European industrial team is currently developing Spacelab for operation in the U.S. Space Shuttle Orbiter cargo bay. One class of scientific experiments that is planned for Shuttle/Spacelab flights will perform stellar and solar observations. UV and IR imaging sensors for such observations require very precise pointing over a large sky range. These requirements, which are beyond the Orbiter capability, will be met by a Spacelab Instrument Pointing System (IPS). This paper will describe the IPS, its functions, operational modes and design features. In addition, the IPS performance goals are stated and the results of single- and three-axis dynamic analyses will be presented. Functions of the IPS include: securing the experiment during Orbiter launch and landing; alternatively, experiment fine pointing or scanning a sky target, or tracking an earth fixed target; and carrying power and data signals to and from the experiment or Spacelab.
