A possible scenario for the evolution of earth's atmosphere and hydrosphere at early stages in the development of the planet is considered. It is hypothesized that the surface temperature was below zero C at the initial moment 4.5 billion years ago (since the solar constant was less than its present-day value), that the surface gas pressure at that time was 0.001 atm, and that CO2 intake into the atmosphere was not balanced by Urey equilibrium due to a lack of contact with liquid water. Calculations are performed which indicate that the greenhouse effect in the primitive atmosphere would ensure melting of water ice in equatorial regions over a time period of the order of 100 million years, when the CO2 partial pressure amounted to about 1 atm.
