A simple model is proposed for the variation of the electric field and electron density at subauroral latitudes. It is shown that allowance for the field-aligned current makes it possible to explain the formation of a steplike ionospheric structure during morning hours, large electric fields and a deep electron-density trough during evening hours, and a delay in the electric-field increase with respect to substorm commencement.
