The main properties of the dynamic regime in the quiet thermosphere, derived from recent experimental data, are reviewed. Particular attention is given to mid-latitude data, because most of the measurements are concentrated at these latitudes and the dynamics of the high-latitude thermosphere rarely correspond to the notion 'quiet'. It is shown that an empirical global model of the general circulation at ionospheric heights can be obtained from a systematic statistical description of horizontal ionospheric drift measurements, on the basis of data from a world-wide network of stations, using the space-diversity reception.
