The dynamics of the main electron concentration trough has been investigated during the intense isolated magnetic storm of December 14-18, 1970, when Kp index reached a maximum of 8. It is shown that the trough behavior is controlled: (1) during the principal phase of the storm - by the magnitude of the electric field in the magnetospheric tail, and (2) during the recovery phase - by the filling of the tube of force.
