The gas within a radius of 2 pc (=41arcsec) of the galactic center appears to be almost completely ionized. It forms the H II region Sgr A West, which consists of a compact central H II region embedded in an extended H II region of lower surface brightness. The authors have mapped the H 66α radio recombination line emission at 1.3 cm wavelength using the MPIfR 100-m radio telescope with an angular resolution of 42arcsec. The observations show a rotation of the ionized gas in the plane Δb = 0 in the sense of general galactic rotation but around a dynamical center, which is displaced by Δl ≡ -5arcsec to -10arcsec from the center position. The observed profiles are compared with model line profiles computed for two different mass distributions. The positions of center of gravity of the central stellar cluster and point mass, respectively, do not appear to coincide. If this point mass is in fact a supermassive object, a supermassive star can be ruled out on the basis of the low bolometric and Lyc-photon luminosities derived from observations. An accreting black hole may be a better candidate for this central point mass. A very preliminary survey of the ionized gas perpendicular to the plane Δb = 0 has also been made.
