The ion distribution function near the bow shock was measured with high time resolution by the Prognoz-10-Intercosmos satellite in the framework of the Intershock program. Measurements made behind the front of an intense quasi-perpendicular shock wave indicate that the distribution function has a fine spatial and temporal structure, apparently consisting of many narrow beams. At the front of an intense oblique shock wave, the velocity discontinuity of the proton flux corresponds to the passage of a potential front with a thickness less than 5 km.
