Morphological results about the existence of regular variations of the global Sq-field in dependence on season and universal time (UT) are described. It has been shown that two-dimensional dynamo models are able to account for most data found morphologically for mean annual Sq-fields. Attempts to describe the morphological results about UT and seasonal variations of the Sq-field with a two-dimensional dynamo model have not had success. It has been concluded that three-dimensional plasmaspheric current systems, taking into consideration the coupling between both hemispheres, are needed to explain these regular variations. The distribution of the plasmaspheric field-aligned currents to be expected from theoretical calculations as well as from the morphological results is described.
