An analysis was performed of the Sq(H) focus position in the sunspot minimum years 1963-65. The effects of abnormal and normal quiet days and associated substorm events were eliminated from consideration. All days identified as quiet according to the aa indices were included, and the focus latitude for each quiet day was determined by the maximum amplitude at each of 7 stations. The data indicated that a West-East ionospheric current at all latitudes, which is separate from the Sq(H) current loop system, produced a superposed northward field which caused the abnormal quiet days. The strength of the superposed field was latitude and longitude dependent. The focus of the Sq(H) variation was determined to be near 40 deg latitude in March-Oct., and at lower latitudes during the winter months. A discussion of the effects of the interplanetary magnetic field on the abnormal quiet days is presented.
