A complex interplay between forces, motions, and ion-electron processes governs the detailed dynamics of the earth's ionosphere. The present investigation is concerned with the interplay between the forces acting on the nighttime F layer plasma. It is pointed out that the Arecibo Observatory is well suited to the study of these interrelated forces, since the magnetic field is inclined at about a 45 deg angle to the vertical. A description is given of examples which illustrate the two dominant processes which control midlatitude F layer dynamics, taking into account the external electric field-diffusion mechanism (October 10-11, 1980) and the F layer dynamo mechanism (December 25-26, 1981). Attention is also given to a third night (june 15-16, 1982) in which neither of these mechanisms is present, although the F layer was quite active.
