This paper presents several variational principles which lead to the first and the second geodesic deviation equations, recently formulated by the author and used for the description of the relative motion of test particles in general relativity. Relations between these principles have been investigated and exhibited here. The paper contains also a study of the Hamilton-Jacobi equation for these generalized deviations and a discussion of the conservations laws appearing here.
