Solar Wind: Dynamics, Solar Wind: Ions
Scientific paper
The authors describe measurements of fluxes of protons, α-particles, and heavy ions in the solar wind which were performed on the satellite Prognoz-7 (1978 - 1979). They show that heavy ions are present in the solar wind at all times, and they are almost always detected when conditions are such that they can be observed. They have studied in detail six periods of time, lasting from 1.5 to 3 days, when ions of oxygen, silicon, and iron were detected continuously in solar wind with low and moderate speed (vp ⪉ 450 km/sec). They consider the variations in the hourly means and in the daily means of the oxygen, silicon, and iron abundances, as well as the variations in their ionization temperatures. The latter remain approximately constant, whereas the abundance may change by orders of magnitude. The authors establish that the daily mean abundance of heavy ions (and helium) is substantially reduced when there is an increase in the density of protons (or in their flux): the abundance changes proportionally for all ions heavier than protons. For these six intervals of time, there is good agreement between data in the literature and our values of the abundances.
