The moment of inertia of the earth is examined. The apparent secular accelerations of the moon and sun, the lunar and solar tidal couples, and the angular acceleration are evalauted. The effects of the lunar couple on the angular momentum of the earth-moon orbit are analyzed. The relation between the moment of inertia of the earth and the angular acceleration is studied. It is determined that the moment of inertia of the earth is diminishing at an average of -1.67 x 10 to the 27th sq cm g/s during the past 3300 years and the moment of inertia decreased during the past 3 Ga at an average rate of -1.72 x 10 to the 27 sq cm g/s. The application of the iron-core theory to the rate of decrease of the moment of inertia of the earth reveals that the theory does not accurately explain the rate of decrease.
