I discuss a new time-dependent dynamical theory showing how magnetically dominated helical configurations relax to become helical on the largest scale available. This differs from existing dynamo approaches for strongly magnetized laboratory configurations which are not fully dynamical, and goes beyond Taylor relaxation theory which describes only the final state. The theory complements recent progress in nonlinear astrophysical dynamo theory by generalizing the principles recently learned therein to magnetically dominated regimes more consistent with laboratory conditions. Relaxation proceeds on dynamical, not resistively limited time scales and magnetic helicity conservation is key. Dynamo theory emerges as an example where progress would greatly benefit from further bridging the gap between laboratory and astrophysical thinkers.
