The contribution of dissipating internal gravity waves to the thermal balance of the upper atmosphere is examined. The transfer of sensible heat by two-dimensional quasi-static gravity waves is analyzed for the case of a plane, nonrotating atmosphere, and it is shown that the dissipating waves induce a downward flux of sensible heat irrespective of the sense of wave propagation. This flux contributes to warming at lower levels and may even induce a net cooling in regions of the lower thermosphere.
