Wave perturbations in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere are considered. Employing a mechanistic model, the role of gravity waves, tides, and planetary waves for the general circulation is investigated. Numerical simulation experiments related to these types of wave perturbations are discussed: generation of planetary waves by gravity waves; response of the middle atmosphere to weak external forcing; and three dimensional simulation of tides.
