A study of the factors which affect the duration of spread F has been conducted, taking into account the published ionospheric data of Trivandrum, India, for the year 1970. The duration of spread F is determined by using the ionograms taken at 15-min intervals. The parameter h'F is taken to represent the height variations of the F region. It is suggested that the fluctuating east-west electric field forms one of the prerequisites of spread F generating and sustaining mechanisms.
