Two EISCAT UHF and VHF radar facilities in Scandinavia are used simultaneously to measure, in two different directions, the electron density profiles associated with three electron precipitation events in the early morning sector. They may be classified by: (1) diffuse precipitation during the August 12, 1988 observations, associated with weak precipitation fluxes, low magnetic activity, and slowly varying absorption; (2) a discrete absorption event during the June 6-7, 1990 experiment, associated with strong fluxes, moderately high magnetic activity, and electric field strengths above the threshold for the Farley-Buneman instability in the electrojet region; and (3) a mixed event during the June 8-9, 1990 experiment, showing features similar to cases (1) and (2) and associated with moderately strong fluxes, stronger absorption, and higher magnetic activity. The lifetime of the ionization patches decreases with increasing precipitation flux and is of the order of the recombination time.
