A new species of fine structure type IV solar radio burst, drifting spikes, has been observed in the 500 MHz range. Dynamic spectra of the region 490 to 535 MHz show a large number of bursts of short duration (about 0.12 sec), narrow bandwidth (less than 1.5 MHz, with a range of 2.7 MHz) and a frequency drift from higher to lower frequencies (about -23 MHz/sec) imposed on a smooth continuum. Bursts tend to occur as pairs at roughly the same frequency or time, repeated at various intervals. If the emission frequencies are near the plasma frequencies, electron densities of 3 to 5.5 x 10 to the 9th/cu cm at heights below 50,000 km in active regions are indicated. A possible quasi-periodic generation of the drifting spikes by plasma turbulence in flare regions has been proposed, and further investigation may lead to the detection of small scale acceleration processes in solar flares
