The literature on equatorial spread-F irregularities is searched for evidence that the spatial resonance mechanism can explain the wavelike structure of the macroscale of the equatorial range-spread-F. It is found that the periodic range-spread-F structure occurs after the vertical ionization drift reverses from upward to downward. This means that the limiting condition for the spatial resonance mechanism, namely, equality of ionization drift and phase velocity of atmospheric gravity waves, is fulfilled. As a consequence of this mechanism, electron density gradients are produced which act as a seeding mechanism for plasma instabilities generating equatorial spread-F irregularities.
