On the basis of past studies of minor ions in the solar corona, a parameter study was carried out to illustrate the physical effects that can be extracted from coronal spectral observations and the type of approach taken in interpreting these observations. It is shown that the coronal minor-ion line width, together with the coronal Ly-alpha line width and coronal white light observations, can yield important information concerning the transport and dissipation of energy carried outward from the coronal base by hydromagnetic waves. The application of the Doppler dimming technique, using both radiatively and collisionally excited lines, can provide constraints on the acceleration of coronal minor ions. However, the most important coronal minor-ion observation to obtain is the measurement of line widths.
