Two different types of double layers (DLs) have been found in association with auroral precipitation: electrostatic shocks (ESs) and small-amplitude DLs. Various questions concerning such DLs are examined, including: (1) the relation between small-amplitude DLs and ESs; (2) the relation between ESs and discrete arcs; (3) the existence of strong DLs in the aurora; and the relation between ion conics and ESs. Consideration is also given to the parallel electric field magnitudes on auroral field lines, the existence of parallel electric fields in the return current region, and the importance of the dynamic properties of the parallel electric field on auroral field lines.
