A new optical device, the double grating prism, consisting of two identical direct vision grids in a roof-like arrangement in front of the entrance pupil of the camera of a focal reducer field spectograph, allows the determination of absolute radial velocities of astronomical point sources. Since the method is based on the double image 'heliometer principle' it is free from external influences like seeing, atmospheric dispersion, instrumental bending and telescope guiding. By means of a multiple slit field mask, illuminated by a laboratory spectral lamp, the distortion and dispersion errors of the dispersing element can be determined experimentally as well as the radial velocity zero point. With a 1m-telescope and a reciprocal linear dispersion of 217 A/mm the internal accuracy of the radial velocities for stars down to m(B) = 14 mag is about + or - 6 km/s (s.d.) for spectra with a photographic density above 0.7.
