A brief discussion of the theoretical status of double beta decay is given. A number of experiments searching for double beta decay of 78Ge, 82Se, 100Mo, 136Xe and 150Nd are discussed. A brief review is given of published efforts to search for cosmic dark matter candidate particles and solar axions using the low background detector of a 76Ge double-beta-decay experiment.
