An expression is derived for the Doppler shift of a radio signal in a medium in which the longitudinal gradient of the refractive index is much smaller than the vertical gradient. The general formulas are reduced to integrals of the ray trajectory in a horizontally homogeneous ionosphere. For illustration, a linear ionospheric layer with a variable vertical density gradient and a variable lower bound of the ionosphere is analyzed.
