The absorption of X-rays in the interstellar medium affects the reduction and interpretation of virtually all X-ray observations. Despite this fact, absorption models for the ISM are treated by many astronomers as a black box, as evidenced by the fact that since 2005 more than 300 refereed papers appeared referencing an absorption model which has been obsolete for more than 17 years and which dissappeared from XSPEC and other fitting packages about 10 years ago. In this contribution we describe and compare the physical absorption models for the ISM available in todays spectral modeling packages and present an updated and fast absorption model suitable for modeling X-ray absorption with both CCD- and gratings-based spectrometers. The model is available for all relevant fitting packages and can be downloaded from the first author's www page.
