In this presentation, we consider the formation of plasma depletion layer (magnetic flux pileup) during southward IMF. Observations indicate that typically PDL is absent or weak during southward IMF, although in at least one case a PDL as strong as those observed during northward IMF has been reported. On the other hand, global MHD simulations show pile up at all IMF angles, in sharp contrast to observations. Thus, the question is what is the physics that removes the pileup at the magnetopause in most cases during periods of southward IMF. Interestingly enough, our 3D global hybrid simulations for a purely southward IMF does not show any evidence of pileup. In this presentation, we consider the possibility that wave turbulence may be the missing physics in the global MHD simulations. We will address this puzzle using a combination of local 2D fully kinetic and Hall MHD simulations and 3D global MHD and hybrid simulations.
