Metallicity, Massive Stars, Supernovae
Scientific paper
This thesis presents results from a series of spectroscopic and photometric observations of a sample of 22 Type II plateau supernovae. SNe Type II plateau show a wide range of their observed properties (plateau luminosities, tail luminosities, and expansion velocities) and their physical parameters (explosion energies, ejected masses, initial radii, and 56 N i yields). We derive the abundances of the H II regions at the SN position, when we are able to identify one, or a bright H ii region when no obvious or extremely faint H II region made us impossible to make a measurement with the telescope used. Our oxygen abundances are on the metallicity scale of Kewley et al. (2002) and span a range of 8.15 < 12 + log( O/H ) KD 02 < 9.15. Using these spectroscopic HII regions characteristics, and assuming they are representative of the metallicity of the SN progenitor, we compare them to their SN luminosities obtained for our sample. We find a correlation showing that the low luminosity SN Type IIP tend to have lower abundance progenitors than those with high luminosity SNe (-14.46 < M V < -17.83).
