A large collection of directional and intensity data from Western Europe describes the secular variation of the Earth's magnetic field over the past few millennia. Using this dataset, we found a remarkable coincidence between sharp cusps in geomagnetic field direction and the appearance of intensity maxima, which may constitute a robust characteristic of geomagnetic secular variation occurring over time scales of less than a century (Gallet et al., 2003). More recently, we emphasized the fact that the rising parts of intensity peaks coincide in time with the occurrence of cooling events, such as the Little Ice Age, documented in Western Europe from natural and historical data (Gallet et al., 2005). This correlation suggests a connection between enhanced secular variation of the geomagnetic field and climate change over decadal to centennial time scales. Mechanisms that could involve the geomagnetic field as a cause of these climatic variations should therefore be sought. Y. Gallet, A. Genevey, V.
