We discuss the possibility that space-time has (3+N)+1 dimensions, but ordinary (light) particles are confined in a potential well which is narrow along N spatial directions and flat along three others. A five-dimensional model is considered in which this picture arises naturally. In a universe of this type, processes looking like e+e- --> nothing are possible at high energies.
