For massive boson fields in Robertson-Walker universe the renormalizability requirement is shown to restrict severely the vacuum choice. It rules out vacua defined by hamiltonian diagonalization and the ``quantum equivalence principle''. For allowed vacuum states local polarization terms of the energy-momentum tensor mean values are presented.
