The BD-3 detector on the Vega 1 and 2 was used to investigate the parameters of the Comet Halley plasma. Data were obtained on the location and thickness of the shock front, the distribution of heavy-ion concentration in the comet mantle, and plasma convection in the mantle. The comet mantle, consisting mainly of heavy ions, was found to have a relatively sharp (about 8000 km) side boundary, where an elevated ion concentration was observed.
