Examination of the water-soluble Cl content of surface and subsurface
shales indicates: 1. (1) ground water leaching seriously reduces the
Cl content of shales; 2. (2) the average Cl content of shales may be
as much as 14 times the average normally proposed; and 3. (3) most of
the Cl in shales is water soluble.
