The effects that a model bow shock has on the pitch distributions of energetic particles (including 10-keV to 1-MeV protons) from interplanetary space are assessed theoretically. It is shown that substantial distortions occur when the interplanetary anisotropy is large. For a given ratio of maximum to minimum directional intensity in the interplanetary pitch distribution, the distortion depends on the position of the observing station in the magnetosheath (or solar wind), on the magnetic configuration, and on the detailed shape of the interplanetary pitch distribution. In some cases the magnetic configuration is such that guiding center motion with Liouville's theorem is a good approximation, and the transformed distributions are easily calculated. Distorted pitch distributions in the magnetosheath are often characterized by a pronounced break.
